Vaginal Dryness and Chinese Medicine

Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about vaginal dryness 🤓

Regardless of age, most women experience vaginal dryness at some point in their lives, and it is a topic that comes up often in my practice.

Common Causes:

🔴 Normal changes throughout your menstrual cycle: When your estrogen levels dip around day 21-28 (pre-menstrual phase), you will most likely experience the most dryness throughout your entire cycle. This is totally normal and due to fluctuations in the fluids the cervix produces in response to hormones.

♀️ Low Estrogen: Estrogen is responsible for keeping the cervix lubricated. Besides menstrual cycle changes, there are often other causes for low levels of the hormone including menopause, thyroid disorders, excessive exercise, anorexia, chemotherapy, and certain medications like birth control pills.

💧 In Chinese Medicine, estrogen and vaginal fluids are considered to be “yin” in nature, meaning they are nourishing, moisturizing, and cooling. A lack of yin is what results in vaginal dryness and is often accompanied by symptoms like hot flashes, night sweats, hyperthyroidism, insomnia, anxiety, heart palpitations, and dry skin to name a few.

To nourish your yin, I recommend avoiding processed foods, sugar, alcohol, caffeine, and spicy foods. Acupuncture and herbal medicine are immensely helpful in treating vaginal dryness and the above conditions due to yin deficiency.
